4 in 10 Women Consider Happiness a State of Being

How do you define happiness? If you're like most people, you know when you're happy but rarely try to actually quantify your happiness. As part of the POPSUGAR Insights "Find Your Happy" study, we surveyed women to determine exactly what it means to be happy.

Forty-four percent of women overall consider happiness to be a "state of being," which includes being content with life (16%), being stress free (14%), or being satisfied or comfortable with who they are (5%). Thirty-two percent of women associate happiness with family, including the number one individual response of spending time with family (21%). Family is an especially important definition of happiness for married women (48%) and parents (47%).

Twenty-five percent of women consider happiness to be an extension of the people in their lives (25%), including spending time with friends (11%). This is especially true of women without children (27%). For teenage girls (13-17), happiness means overall life enjoyment (31%), including finding activities and experiences that allow them to enjoy life.
