What Makes Women Happiest in Entertainment (TV and Movies)

For many women, happiness means heading out to the theaters, grabbing some popcorn, and enjoying the latest release. For others, happiness means curling up on the couch on a rainy Sunday and binge-watching Orange Is the New Black. We wanted to know what made women happiest in entertainment, so as part of the POPSUGAR Insights "Find Your Happy" study, we surveyed women to determine what it was about movies and TV products that made them happiest.

Over 34% of women said it was the specific genre, regardless of the format, that made them happiest. Women love to laugh and therefore comedy (20%), ranked first overall. Married women were more likely to seek out comedy (26%) than single women. Twenty-seven percent of women cited a specific media experience as what drives their happiness. Movies and films (16.3%) barely edged out TV shows (16%) as the most popular format, with Netflix individually cited by 1.4% of women.

Over 24% of women focused on the content itself, saying that regardless of the format, it's important that their entertainment content have a good story or plot, is interesting or captivating, and features likable characters. Proving that art doesn't need to imitate life, only 1.8% of women demand a story with happy ending.

Twenty-four percent of women, including 33% of teen girls, cited a specific show, movie, or channel as what makes them happiest. The individual winner in this category was The Walking Dead, which was the most cited show by both teen girls and women overall in nearly every age group.
